Aesthetically appealing communities with a sense of place—unique local identity and character—improve resident wellbeing and encourage tourism. Re-designing our built environment to create a vibrant sense of place in Muldoon synergizes with efforts to improve trails, pedestrian and bike-friendly streets, and accessible public transportation.

POLE BANNERS
To visually unite Northeast Anchorage while highlighting our community's assets

Currently there is no visual indication when you have entered Northeast Anchorage or Muldoon aside from the Muldoon Road traffic signs at intersections.

Other neighborhoods including Mountain View have installed colorful pole banners that create a sense of place and unique character for their community.

We have 32 green lamp posts on Muldoon between Boundary Ave and 16th Ave and 5 more on Debarr in front of Fred Myer.

This annual tradition brought holiday cheer to Northeast Anchorage for decades.

Existing green street lights have hardware for lights and pole banners
We could also add banners to the tall street lights and orient the banners perpendicular to the direction of traffic (unlike the existing hardware on the green lamp posts) to increase visibility for drivers

 NORTHEAST ANCHORAGE SIGN
To welcome visitors to our community and visually indicate to road users when they have entered Northeast Anchorage
MULDOON COMMUNITY SIGN
Northeast Anchorage sign for the ground

Community identity signs help create a sense of place, welcome visitors to the neighborhood, and can drive economic development. The sign and pole over Muldoon Road could mirror the illuminated columns with designs cut out from metal on the Muldoon-Glenn Hwy overpass. A design that lights up would visually tie the neighborhood together in all light conditions and create an inviting atmosphere on dim winter nights. A matching southbound sign could be installed near Peck Ave.

If a sign over Muldoon wouldn’t be feasible, a three-dimensional sign on the ground like gated communities often have could be an alternative. The Muldoon-Debarr intersection may be a good location, but this would be less visible than a sign over the roadway.

Inspiration:
FISH MURAL
To add art to existing infrastructure while highlighting our local streams and their cultural significance
FISH MURAL example

Proposed location: Creekside Trail starts at the SW corner of Debarr and Muldoon, runs along the creek, goes under Creekside Center Drive, around Begich Middle School and out Chester Ct. The Creekside Trail underpass just east of Begich Middle School is currently covered in graffiti. It could be improved with a salmon-themed mural.

A salmon-themed mural would be a great opportunity to highlight an asset of the local environment and the area’s cultural heritage at the same time. The video from Washington to the left is a great example of a salmon mural painted collaboratively with a Native artist.

In the interest of promoting transparency with community development projects, the attachment for the fish mural and bike rack idea submitted for the 2025 Mayor’s Beyond the Beige Arts Grant can be

GIANT WORD ART
To add art around the Muldoon & Debarr intersection while highlighting the nearby community assets; Muldoon Library, Creekside Trail, and Chanshtnu Muldoon Park
Giant signage idea is inspired by the Pop Art sculpture of a giant FREE stamp in Cleveland by Oldenburg and van Bruggen. The idea would be for them to be very bold and very big on purpose. They will stand out from the surroundings. That’s the point.

Quote from the 2016 Muldoon Town Square Park Master Plan advocating for "prominent Muldoon Presence"

The ideas presented on this site build off of planning work done previously by residents in years past. The 2016 Muldoon Town Square Park Master Plan completed community workshops and came to the same conclusion as current residents that Muldoon, and specifically the area along Chanshtnu Muldoon Park at the intersection with Debarr, should be a focus of placemaking efforts.
